Artificial Intelligence and Big Data are transforming the way we collect, analyze, and apply information across disciplines. Advances in computing power, widespread access to massive datasets from sensors and connected devices, and the development of sophisticated algorithms have accelerated the impact of AI on everyday life. In the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, faculty are addressing critical challenges through research in areas such as statistical signal processing, machine learning, data mining, data fusion, image processing, computer vision, and game theory. Their work includes developing AI methods for analyzing medical images and video, interpreting genomic data to detect cancer markers, identifying toxins and pathogens in water supplies, and enabling face recognition for security. These efforts are closely tied to interdisciplinary collaborations with the Miller School of Medicine and the College of Arts & Sciences, where novel signal and image processing methodologies are applied to biomedical and societal problems. As this cluster grows, the department is expanding its ability to design advanced algorithms and systems that meet the demands of big data applications while navigating the complex requirements of privacy, security, and regulation.
